Candidate for Monterey County Superintendent of Schools



As the Deputy Superintendent of the Monterey County Office of Education, Dr. Deneen Newman Guss has been responsible for administering the day-to-day operations of all divisions and services throughout the organization.

Dr. Deneen Newman Guss continually supports Monterey County’s 24 local school districts and the over 77,000 students they serve.

Dr. Deneen Newman Guss is a 30-year educator with a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership.

Since 2013, she has served as the Deputy Superintendent for the Monterey County Office of Education. Prior to coming to the county office, Deneen served as:

  • District superintendent of Soledad Unified School District
  • Associate superintendent of educational services
  • Director of curriculum and instruction
  • Principal and assistant principal
  • Classroom teacher for 10 years, including teaching
    in a bilingual program for two years
  • Master teacher for teacher candidates
  • Mentor teacher for new teachers
  • Former college adjunct professor for San Jose State University

Dr. Deneen Newman Guss has a strong record of accomplishment.

She led Soledad in the development of solid systems around teaching and learning and prioritized high expectations for student achievement. Deneen established and coordinated multiple district-wide committees as well as expanded a standards-based reporting system.

Dr. Deneen Newman Guss focused on building strong instructional strategies to support all students with an emphasis on the needs of English learners and she invested in teacher capacity to improve learning systems through evidence-based approaches.

Dr. Deneen Newman Guss completed her undergraduate studies with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from California State University, Dominguez Hills, her Masters of Arts in Education degree in Administration and Supervision from California State University, San Jose, and her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Argosy University.

With a lens of community and equity Dr. Deneen Newman Guss is focused on strengthening community engagement and improving educational outcomes for Monterey County’s youth.

Dr. Deneen Newman Guss is married to Mr. Jim Guss. Jim serves as the Administrative Aide to the Superintendent of the Santa Cruz County Office of Education. Together they have three children. Mallorie lives in Cape Coral, Florida and is a business tax specialist for the City of Ft. Meyers. Christopher is an aerospace engineer and lives in San Diego and Katelynn is a scientific researcher and lives in San Mateo.
